Retail Bakers Association

RETAIL BAKERS OF AMERICA: http://www.rbanet.com/

BELOW IS AN EXCERPT FROM: http://www.rbanet.com/News/PR_MarchOnWashington.htm

This march is in conjunction with the American Bakers Association (ABA) and
bakers from around the country will be in Washington. Meetings have been set up
with government officials including the Secretary of Agriculture for the board
members of ABA and RBA. It is our hope to show just how much of a crisis we
face. This issue is not about the “big guys” vs. the “little guys”. This issue
is about how our industry will survive the next 12 to 18 months. By standing
side by side we can implement change.

WHEAT UPDATE

THE AMERICAN BAKERS ASSOCIATION AND THE WHEAT SHORTAGE.

BELOW IS AN EXCERPT FROM THEIR WEB-SITE (http://www.americanbakers.org):

Bakers Band Together to Demand Relief - ABA Calls for March on Washington

The American Bakers Association is calling upon all bakers to band together
in Washington, D.C. for an industry march to stress the urgency of the current
wheat situation. We will meet with the White House, USDA and key members of
Congress.

On March 12, ABA is arranging for the “Band of Bakers” to meet with
newly confirmed Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer and senior White House
officials. In addition, ABA will be arranging meetings with key Senators and
Representatives so that bakers can stress the urgency of the current wheat
situation, as well as ask Congress to realistically reassess the recent
infatuation with ethanol production. The recently passed Energy Act calls for
even higher ethanol production targets in coming years.

The wheat crisis is effecting more than just bagels, but also the pizza, cereal, cake, and other related baking industries...

FEBRUARY 20, 2008

The United States of America is currently experiencing a wheat shortage. Many bakers have expressed that they fear that flour mill operators won't be able to serve their customers because flour demand outweighs supply.

The price of flour has risen more then 300% since last February.

The reasons for this wheat shortage can be attributed to (1) Increased Exporting of Wheat; (2) Droughts/Bad Crops in South America; and (3) an Increase in the growing of corn over wheat.

The result of the wheat crisis: Flour Prices have skyrocketed, which means the price of bagels, pizza, and other baked goods will continue to rise. The wheat crisis is effecting more than just bagels, but also the pizza, cereal, cake, and other related baking industries.
